Policy: All non-fiction materials in the Faust Jr. High School library should be classified and arranged using the abridged edition of the most recent copy of Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index.
Procedures:
To maintain consistency, check the OPAC for materials about the same topic to see how they were classified.
If there are no items about the same topic, check the item’s CIP for the DDC recommendation.
A third option is to check the Sears Heading index under the main subject to cross-reference the DDC number.
If options #1-3 provide a satisfactory DDC number, use the most recent edition of the Abridged DDC to verify any DDC recommendations that are found.
If no DDC recommendation is found, use the most recent edition of the Abridged DDC to build a call number for the item.
Assign a prefix and cutter to all call numbers. See the classification scheme for the appropriate type of material.
